  • Raccoon…It Tastes like Chicken…er, Beef

We’ve been ministering at a missions conference in Kansas the last few days, and last night they had a missions banquet with lots of different foods from the places that the missionaries were from…China, Japan, Cuba, and…Hillbilly. For the U.S., I’m assuming. ;-)

In the hillbilly room, there was lots of food with cute Hillbilly names…shrimp and hushpuppies and shepherd’s pie and dirt pudding and a delicious dish that looked like beef brisket, labeled “Raccoon”. I looove brisket, so I got some and it was really good.

Having gone to several parties where they rename the food to fit the theme, I naturally thought that it was beef brisket that I ate. Ahem.

So this afternoon the family that hosted the hillbilly food invited us over for lunch. And it was then that I discovered the truth.

    I. Really. Did. Eat. Raccoon.

And this is the girl that though that goat tacos were weird. Or alligator on a stick. Or escargo.

    I ate raccoon.

And it was good. Really good. When I thought it was beef brisket.

I can finally say I ate some sort of exotic food. I mean, it’s about as exotic as you can get, isn’t it? ;-)

    Raccoon. It tastes like Beef.

Although now that I know what it was, I’ll settle for fried chicken next time.

Alligator is soooo good! I’m a Louisiana native and it’s our “other white meat”.

Ew! I’ve had the same thing happen, except it was possum. I’m much more careful at church potlucks now :)
